DNS Basic – Root servers sit at the top of the DNS hierarchy

DNS Basics: Root Servers Sit at the Top of the DNS Hierarchy

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a fundamental component of the internet infrastructure that translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses. It is a distributed database system that allows users to access websites and other online resources using easy-to-remember domain names instead of complex IP addresses.

The DNS Hierarchy

The DNS hierarchy is organized in a tree-like structure, with the root servers sitting at the top. The hierarchy consists of several levels, including the root, top-level domains (TLDs), second-level domains, and subdomains.

At the highest level of the DNS hierarchy are the root servers. These servers are responsible for storing the authoritative information about the top-level domains (TLDs) such as .com, .org, .net, and country-code TLDs like .us, .uk, and .de.

There are 13 sets of root servers distributed worldwide, each represented by a letter from A to M. These servers are operated by different organizations and are geographically dispersed to ensure redundancy and improve the overall performance and reliability of the DNS system.

Root Server Functions

The root servers perform two primary functions:

  1. Responding to Queries: When a DNS resolver receives a query for a domain name, it starts by contacting one of the root servers. The root server responds with a referral to the appropriate TLD server that handles the requested domain. This process is known as recursive resolution, where the resolver iteratively queries different DNS servers until it obtains the final IP address for the domain.
  2. Updating TLD Information: The root servers also play a crucial role in updating the TLD information. They receive regular updates from the TLD servers, which contain the IP addresses of the authoritative name servers for each TLD. These updates ensure that the root servers have the latest information about the TLDs and can provide accurate referrals to the resolvers.

Root Server IP Addresses

As the entry point to the DNS system, the IP addresses of the root servers are essential for the proper functioning of the internet. The root server IP addresses are hardcoded into the DNS resolvers’ configuration or obtained through dynamic updates.

It is important to note that the root servers themselves do not store the entire DNS database. Instead, they provide referrals to the TLD servers, which, in turn, provide referrals to the authoritative name servers responsible for individual domains.

Conclusion

The root servers are the backbone of the DNS hierarchy, providing referrals to the TLD servers and facilitating the resolution of domain names to IP addresses. Their distributed nature and critical functions ensure the smooth operation of the DNS system.
