IIS for Newbies: Set up IP Address Restrictions

Internet Information Services (IIS) is a popular web server software developed by Microsoft. It is widely used for hosting websites and web applications on Windows servers. One of the essential security features offered by IIS is the ability to set up IP address restrictions. In this article, we will explore how to configure IP address restrictions in IIS for beginners.

Why Set Up IP Address Restrictions?

IP address restrictions allow you to control access to your website or web application based on the IP addresses of the incoming requests. By setting up IP address restrictions, you can enhance the security of your server and protect your website from unauthorized access or malicious attacks.

Step 1: Open IIS Manager

To begin, open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager on your Windows server. You can access it by searching for “IIS Manager” in the Start menu or by navigating to the Control Panel and selecting “Administrative Tools” followed by “Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.”

Step 2: Select the Website or Application

In the IIS Manager, expand the server node and navigate to the “Sites” or “Applications” section, depending on whether you want to apply IP address restrictions to a specific website or application. Select the desired website or application.

Step 3: Open IP Address and Domain Restrictions

Once you have selected the website or application, double-click on the “IP Address and Domain Restrictions” feature in the middle pane of the IIS Manager.

Step 4: Add IP Address Restriction

To add an IP address restriction, click on the “Add Allow Entry” or “Add Deny Entry” option in the Actions pane on the right-hand side. The “Add IP Address and Domain Restrictions” dialog box will appear.

In the dialog box, you can specify the IP address or range of IP addresses that you want to allow or deny access to. You can also choose whether to apply the restriction to a specific domain or to all domains.

Step 5: Save and Apply Changes

After adding the IP address restriction, click on the “OK” button to save the changes. The restriction will now be applied to the selected website or application in IIS.

Testing IP Address Restrictions

To test the IP address restrictions, you can try accessing your website or application from a different IP address. If the IP address is allowed, you will be able to access the site. If the IP address is denied, you will receive an error message or be redirected to a different page, depending on your configuration.

Summary

Setting up IP address restrictions in IIS is a crucial step in securing your website or web application. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can easily configure IP address restrictions in IIS and control access to your server.
