IIS Configuration: Configure FTP Site

In this article, we will explore how to configure an FTP site in IIS (Internet Information Services). FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a standard network protocol used for transferring files between a client and a server over a network. By configuring an FTP site, you can enable users to upload, download, and manage files on your server.

Step 1: Install the FTP Server Role

The first step is to install the FTP server role on your Windows server. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Server Manager and navigate to the “Manage” menu.
  2. Select “Add Roles and Features” to open the wizard.
  3. Click “Next” until you reach the “Server Roles” section.
  4. Expand “Web Server (IIS)” and select “FTP Server.”
  5. Click “Next” and then “Install” to begin the installation process.

Step 2: Configure FTP Site

Once the FTP server role is installed, you can proceed with configuring the FTP site:

  1. Open the IIS Manager by searching for “IIS” in the Start menu.
  2. Expand the server node and right-click on “Sites.”
  3. Select “Add FTP Site” to open the wizard.
  4. Provide a name for your FTP site and specify the path where the files will be stored.
  5. Choose an IP address and port for the FTP site.
  6. Select the SSL certificate if you want to enable secure FTP (FTPS).
  7. Choose the authentication method for your FTP site (anonymous or basic).
  8. Specify the permissions for accessing the FTP site.
  9. Click “Finish” to create the FTP site.

Step 3: Configure FTP Firewall Support

If you have a firewall enabled on your server, you need to configure it to allow FTP traffic:

  1. Open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security.
  2. Click on “Inbound Rules” and then “New Rule.”
  3. Select “Port” and click “Next.”
  4. Choose “Specific local ports” and enter the FTP port (default is 21).
  5. Select “Allow the connection” and click “Next.”
  6. Choose the network types where this rule should apply.
  7. Provide a name for the rule and click “Finish” to create it.

Step 4: Test the FTP Site

Now that your FTP site is configured, you can test it by connecting to it using an FTP client. Enter the server’s IP address or hostname, along with the username and password if required. You should be able to upload, download, and manage files on the FTP site.
