IIS Configuration: Set up SMTP Email Delivery

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a widely used protocol for sending and receiving emails. In order to enable email functionality on your Windows server, you need to configure the SMTP service in IIS (Internet Information Services). This article will guide you through the process of setting up SMTP email delivery on your Server.HK hosting server.

Step 1: Install the SMTP Server Feature

The first step is to install the SMTP Server feature on your Windows server. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your server using Remote Desktop Connection or any other remote access tool.
  2. Open the Server Manager by clicking on the Windows icon and selecting “Server Manager.”
  3. In the Server Manager, click on “Add roles and features.”
  4. Follow the wizard and select the appropriate server.
  5. In the “Server Roles” section, expand “Web Server (IIS)” and select “SMTP Server.”
  6. Click “Next” and then “Install” to begin the installation process.

Step 2: Configure SMTP Server Settings

Once the SMTP Server feature is installed, you need to configure the server settings. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand the server node and click on “SMTP E-mail.”
  3. In the “SMTP E-mail” feature view, double-click on “SMTP Virtual Server #1.”
  4. In the “SMTP Virtual Server Properties” window, go to the “General” tab.
  5. Enter a unique name for the virtual server in the “Description” field.
  6. Specify the IP address for the virtual server in the “IP address” field.
  7. Go to the “Access” tab and click on the “Relay” button.
  8. In the “Relay Restrictions” window, select the option “Only the list below” and click on “Add.”
  9. Add the IP addresses or IP ranges that are allowed to relay through the SMTP server.
  10. Click “OK” to save the changes.

Step 3: Test SMTP Email Delivery

After configuring the SMTP server settings, it’s important to test if the email delivery is working correctly. Here’s how:

  1. Open a command prompt on your server.
  2. Use the following command to send a test email:
    telnet localhost 25
    ehlo
    mail from: [sender email address]
    rcpt to: [recipient email address]
    data
    Subject: Test Email
    This is a test email.
    .
    quit
  3. If the email is successfully sent, you should receive it in the recipient’s inbox.
